Calendar for 2027-28 school year considered for approval at upcoming meeting
Setting the K-12 academic calendar is a School Board responsibility based on the recommendation from a calendar committee comprised of school and district leaders, teachers, paraeducators, and school office staff. Following a public presentation and initial review in May, the K-12 school calendar for the 2027-28 school year will be considered for approval at the June 22 school board meeting.
Why it matters: The school district aims to provide ample advance notice on calendar dates to allow for professional and personal planning for employees and families.
Go deeper: The draft recommendation is formed by the calendar committee following planning parameters that include legal guidelines, agreements with employee groups, balancing dates across trimesters, professional development, staff planning and conferences along with other planning guidelines.
Key dates: The timing and length of winter break and spring break underwent considerable review and discussion through reviewing six possible options prior to the recommendation. Key dates include: September 7, 2027 as the first day of the school year; December 23, 2027 to January 3, 2028 as winter break; and March 27 to 31, 2028 as spring break.
